ICS Builds a Playground in One Day!

More than 300 volunteers from Independence Charter School, KaBOOM, SAP America, Inc., IBM Corp., City-Year, The Hun School and other residents of our local community joined forces on Thursday, October 23 to build a new, safe playground at Independence Charter School.

The inspirational event represented the culmination of months of cooperation on the part of countless parent and community volunteers. The dream started in the fall of 2007 when an ICS parent applied for a playground grant from KaBOOM, a non-profit organization which brings together businesses and community interests to construct playgrounds and other recreational facilities.  In August 2008, Independence Charter learned that we had been approved for the grant and that IBM and SAP had committed to be our corporate funders.

The new playground’s design is based on drawings provided by children who attended a KaBOOM Playground Design Day event in late August. Design Day launched a two month comprehensive volunteer project which involved weekly committee meetings and hours of preparation. Volunteers signed on to recruit volunteers, to oversee construction, logistics and safety, to secure food and equipment donations, and to coordinate youth activities and public relations.

Everything came together on the October 23, when 300 volunteers arrived at 8:00 am prepared to build a playground in one day.  Through an amazing collaboration, by 3:00 p.m. our lot was transformed from a patch of asphalt to the Independence Charter School Playground! The new playground was welcomed by 80 ICS students who created thank you signs for our benefactors and volunteers.

Thank you KaBOOM, SAP, IBM, City-Year, The Hun School and of course Independence Charter School families for providing our students with an amazing new play space!
