ICS News – 11/6

Hello families, and welcome to November!

Thank you to all who sent in Box Tops–we collected over 5600 Box Tops to raise money for the 7th grade Heifer trip this spring!

Thanks also to everyone who supported the Clothes Swap for Take Flight–the event raised nearly $700! If you missed your chance to attend but want to support Take Flight, you can donate here.

As the holidays approach, if you are a person who does your shopping on Amazon, be sure to start at ICS’s Smile page every time–a small % of your purchase will be donated to ICS.

VOTE tomorrow!

If you are new to ICS, it will come as no surprise that ICS families take voting very seriously! There is nothing we love more than seeing all the voting stickers on ICS community members at dropff/pickup and on social media on election day twice each year. Our young global citizens are learning early how important it is to exercise our right to cast a ballot and effect change in our communities.

If you need to study up on the ballot, the candidates, or the ballot questions, Committee of Seventy’s election guide is a great place to start. They can also answer just about any other question about voting in Philadelphia!

Language Task Force Update

Last night, Principal Kristen sent out a comprehensive summary of the work of the Language Task Force along with helpful Q&A’s. If you are interested in ICS’s future program planning, be sure to set aside some time this week to read it through!

lntroducing the ICS Buddy Bench

On Unity Day a new bench designed by our 4th graders was unveiled in the play yard! Its purpose is to help students who feel lonely or apprehensive about joining in with their peers, or who may need extra support to find some friends during recess. Students can sit on the bench to show they are looking for a classmate to check in on them or to invite them to play. Students who are willing to support another student can also sit on the bench to signal they are ready to reach out to offer companionship and build unity!

Sibling Applications for 2018-2019

This year our lottery process is starting later than usual. The applications will be available from January 1-March 1. If you are planning on submitting a sibling application, you will follow the standard application process and indicate on your application that it is for an ICS sibling.

To qualify for “sibling” status for 2018-2019, a student must meet all three criteria below:

  • Share a parent/guardian with a current ICS student (as listed on birth certificate or custody documentation)
  • Share a household with a current ICS student
  • Have a current ICS sibling who will still be enrolled at ICS in the 2018-2019 school year

Incoming kindergarten siblings will automatically receive a space if criteria is met and application is received by the March 1 deadline. Siblings in grades 1-8 will be placed on a preferred sibling waiting list.

We will send out many reminders in January and February to make sure you don’t miss the window!
