Back to School Resources – Summer Edition

Hello families,

It might only be July, but we’ve got information you might find useful now!

Fall dates to mark on your calendar:

– Back to School Night for 4th & 6th grades: Wednesday, August 22

– Back to School Night for Kindergarten: Thursday, August 23

– First day of school for 1st-8th grades: Monday, August 27

– First early dismissal Wednesday: Wednesday, August 29 (every Wednesday is early dismissal)

– First day for kindergarten students with last names A-L only: Thursday, August 30

– First day for kindergarten students with last names M-Z only: Friday, August 31

– School closed in observance of Labor Day: Monday, September 3

– First day for all kindergarten students together: Tuesday, September 4

– Back to School Night for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd grades: Wednesday, September 5

– Back to School Night for 5th, 7th & 8th grades: Thursday, September 6

– Scholastic Book Fair hosted by the PTA: September 4-11

The 2018-2019 calendar-at-a-glance has been revised to reflect new 2019 PSSA testing dates recently released by the state.

Teacher assignments are typically finalized about 2 weeks before school starts. We will alert you as soon as they are available.

Bus route information is typically not mailed out by the District until just before the first day of school. ICS Transportation will alert parents when the District tells us that letters have been mailed.

The 2018-2019 Aftercare Providers list has recently been updated to include Makom Community.

If you are moving within Philadelphia this summer, please do not delay in submitting the proper paperwork to ICS so that you can receive back to school mailings and will not experience disruptions in school bus service at the start of the school year. Contact Tr. Jenny for assistance.


All students who will be in K & 6th grades this school year must submit updated physical exam reports before the 1st day of school. You can use our form or any standard report your doctor provides.

All students who will be in K, 3rd, & 7th grades this school year must submit updated dental exams reports before the 1st day of school. You can use our form or any standard report your doctor provides.


Uniform shirts for 5th-8th grade students: You can purchase embroidered uniform shirts from Lands’ End or buy your own red polos and have them embroidered at Triple Play Sports. We will also have the entire gently-used uniform collection available to “shop” during the whole week of July 23-27, so please come and take everything.

Lower school families are also invited to take uniforms during the July 23-27 week! We will have tops and bottoms in all sizes. Remember that red dresses and red sweaters are NOT ICS Dress Code compliant. All polo dresses and all sweaters must be navy.


The free Summer Meals program has begun! Youth age 18 & under qualify regardless of income or citizenship status, as well as individuals over 18 who participate in a public or non-profit school program for physically or intellectually disable students. No registration or ID is required. Over 1000 recreation centers, play streets, faith-based organizations, public housing sites and other locations throughout Philadelphia serve free breakfast, lunches and/or snacks Monday-Friday through August. Are you looking to keep your skills sharp this summer? IXL (www.ixl.com) and KidsA-Z (www.kidsa-z.com) accounts are available for most of the summer for current students.

There’s no better way to build brain power than by enjoying and discussing great books together. Visit your local library and stock up on family read-alouds for the summer! Here’s a list for all ages to get you started.

If you’re hoping to limit screen time, here’s a good article that includes recent pediatrician guidelines. If you google “how to limit screen time in summer” you will find many, many lists of ideas to help you find routines that fit your family!
