Dear Families,
It is my sincerest hope that this email finds you safe and healthy. Our highest priority is to ensure the wellness of every ICS family (emotionally as well as physically) and I ask that you please reach out to any ICS staff member if you need support. I miss our students, staff, and families so very much. This is a distressing crisis, but I take comfort in knowing that we are in this together and that the ICS community is an incredible organization to be a part of.
There are many members of our community that have been offering support of all kinds. Please do let us know if you need support and we will connect you with as many resources as possible – both within and beyond ICS. Look out for the forthcoming email from our counselors about ways to check-in on your emotions and mental health.
As CEO Tanya wrote in her last update, Governor Wolf has ordered schools closed “until safe.” The PA Secretary of Education, Pedro Rivera says “until further notice.” We find this information out at the same time you did! Unfortunately, it is impossible for us to say when (and if) children will return to school this year.
This is what we can tell you for sure:

April 6th-April 10th: Spring Break. The speed, skill, and grace with which our teachers and families have pivoted from their daily routine to “work-from-home- distance-learning-while-dealing-with-pandemic-fears” is notable and we hope that this week can give everyone a chance to breathe, regroup, and establish (or revise) routines.

April 13th – April 17th. Most families will continue to receive assignments in the manner in which they received them this past week. Teachers will use the week of the 13th to streamline their communication and content delivery to best meet the needs of teachers and families. We encourage families to reach out to their child’s teacher about what’s working and what’s not.

April 20th – ? Assignments and learning activities will become required. This does not mean that students will need to log on at a specific time of day to listen to a teacher’s lesson. Rather, they will be required to do the work assigned by the teacher during times that work best for families. You will receive more detailed guidance by April 14th. Our number one concern is the health and well-being of all community members, so please reach out to staff members about any obstacles your family faces in completing these assignments.

If you need to borrow a Chromebook from ICS: We know that some ICS families who initially reported “okay with tech at home” on last month’s survey are feeling the strain of sharing devices for an extended period of time, especially if you have a 4th-8th grade student. Please email Tr. Jenny at jennyh@icscharter.com if this applies to your family, and she will be in touch with you within a few days to let you know the process for borrowing an ICS Chromebook.

If you have other technology questions: Email helpdesk@icscharter.com. Starting the week of April 13, we will also begin offering live HelpDesk hours (you’ll be able to join via Zoom or call in via phone) a few times per week. We will send each week’s schedule at the beginning of the week.

Espero sinceramente que este correo electrónico los encuentre seguros y saludables. Los maestros usarán esa semana para optimizar su comunicación y entrega de contenido para satisfacer mejor las necesidades de los maestros y las familias. Alentamos a las familias a comunicarse con el maestro de sus hijos sobre lo que funciona y lo que no.

20 de abril -? Se requerirán tareas y actividades de aprendizaje. Esto no significa que los estudiantes necesiten iniciar sesión a una hora específica del día para escuchar la lección de un maestro. Por el contrario, se les pedirá que hagan el trabajo asignado por el maestro durante los momentos que mejor funcionen para las familias. Recibirá orientación más detallada antes del 14 de abril. Nuestra principal preocupación es la salud y el bienestar de todos los miembros de la comunidad, así que comuníquese con los miembros del personal sobre los obstáculos que enfrenta su familia para completar estas tareas.

Si necesita tomar prestado un Chromebook de ICS: Sabemos que algunas familias de ICS que inicialmente informaron “estar de acuerdo con la tecnología en casa” en la encuesta del mes pasado sienten la tensión de compartir dispositivos durante un período prolongado de tiempo, especialmente si tiene un estudiante de cuarto u octavo grado.
